Stephen Haynes le rinde homenaje a Bill Dixon
El experimentado trompetista, cornetista, compositor, improvisador y educador Stephen Haynes es un emergente de la histórica Black Music Division del Bennington College que dirigiera el inolvidable Bill Dixon, músico al que reconoce como su mentor y con quien colaboró por espacio de casi cuatro décadas.
En su extensa y fértil trayectoria artística, Haynes acredita trabajos y colaboraciones junto a auténticas leyendas de la música contemporánea como George Russell, LaMonte Young, Butch Morris, Bill Dixon, Leroy Jenkins, Rhys Chatham, JD Parran, Cecil Taylor, Adam Rudolph y Gunter Hampel, entre otros.
En la actualidad lidera varios ensambles entre los que se cuenta al trío Parrhesia (con Joe Morris y Warren Smith) y su nuevo quinteto Pomegrante.
Este último proyecto, justamente, se materializó en la producción discográfica del mismo nombre que se ha editado recientemente a través del sello New Atlantis Records.
Pomegranate fue concebido en origen como un homenaje póstumo a la monumental obra del compositor y trompetista Bill Dixon y cuenta con una alineación de notables integrada por su líder en corneta, Joe Morris (Plymouth, The Spanish Donkey, Joe Morris Quartet, etc.) en guitarra, Warren Smith (Composer’s Workshop Ensemble, Gil Evans Orchestra, Davis S. Ware Quartet) en batería y percusión, William Parker (Farmer’s by Nature, In Order to Survive y Other Dimensions in Music, entre muchos otros) en contrabajo y Ben Stapp (Zozimos Collective, International Contemporary Ensemble, TILT brass ensemble) en tuba.
El álbum contiene seis composiciones originales pertenecientes a Stephen Haynes –Sillage, Mangui Fii Reek (I Am Still Here), Pomegranate, Becoming, Crepuscular y Odysseus (Lashed to the Mast)– en las que su autor desarrolla de manera muy personal algunos de los conceptos estéticos y composicionales esbozados por Bill Dixon.
