Wadada Leo Smith edita dos nuevos box sets
El incomparable trompetista y compositor Wadada Leo Smith agregará a su prestigiosa trayectoria artística las ediciones simultáneas de String Quartets Nos. 1-12 (caja de 7 discos con composiciones para cuarteto de cuerdas interpretadas por el RedKoral Quartet e invitados especiales) y el box set de 5 discos titulado The Emerald Duets, el cual reúne una serie de piezas para dueto de trompeta y batería en donde participan Pheeroan akLaff, Andrew Cyrille, Han Bennink y Jack DeJohnette.
El primero de los cinco discos que integra The Emerald Duets -subtitulado Litanies, Prayers and Meditations– está encarnado por Wadada Leo Smith y el baterista Pheeroan AkLaff e integra ocho composiciones originales: The Prayer (for Keith Jarrett); First Meditation from the Heart: the Beauty, the Beloved; The Uyghur in Xinjiang, China; Rumi’s Masnavi: A Sonic Expression; A Sonic Litany on Peace; Patriotic Act, Unconstitutional and a Force that Destroys Democracy; A Sonic Litany on Justice (coescrita por Smith y akLaff) y Second Meditation from the Heart: the Beloved, the Beauty.
El segundo disco -denominado Havana, Cuba– ofrece también ocho piezas (The Patriot Act, Unconstitutional and a Force that Destroys Democracy; Havana, the Maghrib Prayer and Reflections; United States Representative Ilhan Omar; Jeanne Lee: In a Jupiter Mood; Donald Ayler: The Master of the Sound and Energy Forms; A Rainbow Sonic Ark for Tomasz Ludwik Stanko; Haiti, an Independent Nation in 1984 but Not Recognized by Britain, France, Germany, the United States and Others: A Designed Tragedy y Mongezi Feza) en las que Wadada Leo Smith comparte créditos con el baterista Andrew Cyrille.
Mysterious Sonic Fields -el tercer disco- reúne a Wadada Leo Smith con el baterista y percusionista Han Bennink para entregar otras nueve composiciones inéditas.
Tres de ellas pertenecen a Smith (Largo: Mysterious Love Sonic; Louis Armstrong in New York City and Accra, Ghana y Johnny Dyani, the Artist Who Imagined a New South Africa. A Celebration) y las seis restantes (Chrysanthemum Flowers on a Mountaintop; Albert Einstein: Particles of Light, a Study in Perception; Ornette Coleman at the World´s Fair of Science and Art in Fort Worth, Texas; The Call – A Duet between Joseph “King” Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton; Light Garden in a Dream-Space, a Remembrance of Shaba of Ethiopia y Han Bennink on Fifth Avenue, NYC) con autoría compartida entre ambos músicos.
Los discos cuatro (Freedom Summer, The Legacy) y cinco (Paradise: the Gardens and Fountains) cuentan con los aportes de Wadada Leo Smith en trompeta y piano y Jack DeJohnette en batería, piano y Fender Rhodes.
Freedom Summer, The Legacy comprende a los temas Sandalwood and Sage; Freedom Summer; Meditation: A Sonic Circle of Double Piano Resonances; The Patriot Act, Unconstitutional and a Force that Destroys Democracy y Silence, Quietness and Very Still. Y el último disco contiene los cinco movimientos de la suite Paradise: the Gardens and Fountains.
Por su parte, el box set String Quartets Nos. 1-12 congrega doce piezas para cuarteto de cuerdas compuestas por Wadada Leo Smith entre 1965 y 2019 e interpretadas por el prestigioso RedKoral Quartet que conforman las violinistas Shalini Vijayan y Mona Tian, el violista Andrew McIntosh y la cellista Ashley Walters.
El primero de los siete discos comprendidos en String Quartets Nos. 1-12 está integrado por los cuatro movimientos de String Quartet No. 1 y String Quartet No. 2; mientras que el segundo lo componen String Quartet No. 3 – Black Church: A First World Gathering of the Spirit y String Quartet No. 4, aquí sumando al RedKoral Quartet la presencia de la arpista Alison Bjorkedal.
El siguiente disco congrega otras tres composiciones para cuarteto de cuerdas: In Diaspora – Earthquakes and Sunrise Missions; Taif: Prayer in the Garden of the Hijaz (aquí con el agregado de Wadada Leo Smith en trompeta, Anthony Davis en piano y Lynn Vartan en percusión) y Ten Thousand Ceveus Peruvianus Amemevical, en donde se suma el guitarrista Stuart Fox.
El cuarto disco abarca a los temas String Quartet No. 8 “Opuntia Humifusa” (en el que también participan Wadada Leo Smith en trompeta y Thomas Buckner en voz); String Quartet No. 9 y String Quartet No. 10 “Angela Davis: Into the Morning Sunlight.
La parte final del box set (discos 5, 6 y 7) tiene protagonismo excluyente del RedKoral Quartet e incluye a los nueve movimientos de String Quartet No. 11 y los dos movimientos de String Quartet No.12.
String Quartets Nos. 1-12 y The Emerald Duets serán editados simultáneamente el venidero 17 de junio por intermedio del sello discográfico TUM Records.
